The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is the classic tale of Christian and his journey to the CelestialCity. Christian, upon reading in his book, realizes that his city is to be destroyed. He realizes that he must flee from the wrath to come. He warns his family of the impending danger but they think him to be ill. While he is agonizing on how to save himself from this danger, he meets Evangelist who tells him to go to the wicket gate and walk on the straight and narrow road until he reaches the celestial City where he will be taken in by the Lord of that country who is just and merciful. Christian obeys him and since his family refuses to go he goes alone.
However two neighbors follow him to convince him to return to their city. One is named Obstinate and the other Pliable. When Obstinate realizes that Christian will not return he scorns him and goes back from whence he came but Pliable says he wishes to go with Christian.

They soon come to the Slough of Despond and both begin to sink in it. Pliable is vexed that Christian would bring him to such trouble and goes home where he is mocked but Christian receives help from Help who pulls him out and sends him on his way. While he is walking he comes across Mr Worldly Wise Man who convinces him to turn aside on his way. It is there Evangelist meets him again and scolds him for turning aside.Christian then vows to try to stay on the straight road.He passes through the Valley of the Shadow of Death and though he was afraid, he makes it out alive. Then he meets a fellow Pilgrim named Faithful. Together they must pass through the town known as Vanity Fair where the people are not nice to Pilgrims.
They kill Faithful because he refuses to deny the Lord of the CelestialCity and Christian is able to escape with his life and a new friend named Hope. They continue to meet many more trials and tribulations and also those who try to get onto the road through shortcuts. Each one who tries to cheat is cut down. Finally the CelestialCity is there and they enter it with joy.
